Persistent Technologies: How IITian Anand Deshpande built a multicrore business in cloud computing & analytics

// Persistent is one of our regular campus recruiter and this year they selected 6 of our sudents //

didn't think entrepreneurship was for me, what with my father spending 32 years of his life in the corporate world. So, after completing my bachelor's degree in computer sciences and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 1984, I went to the US to complete my post graduation and doctorate in computer sciences from the Indiana University, Bloomington.

                                               Mr. Anand Deshpande

Shortly after I bagged my degree, I started working at the Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, California During my year-long stint before my study visa expired, I made some friends in the IT industry and realised the potential of starting a company specialising in outsourced software product development (OPD) services back home.

So, in September 1990, I returned to India and set about breathing life into my business idea. For seed capital, I used the Rs 2 lakh received as tax refund; this amount was being deducted from my salary while I was working for HP. I also took a loan of Rs 1.6 lak ..

Placements dip as IT firms shrink offers

When Etihad Airways picked up five students from TA Pai Institute of Management for Rs 49.05 lakh salary per annum, it was just a flash in the pan. The campus placement trend for 2014 is a different story altogether.

Two years ago, Infosys had recruited 306 students from Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering but this year, the number dropped to 166. HCL, which recruited over 300 students last year, might skip its campus visit this time. There was one mass recruiter, though: iGate picked up 61 students.

This slowdown sentiment is reflected in other city colleges too. "The number of tier-I and tier-II companies which offer the highest packages are the same. But the breadand-butter companies -- mass recruiters important to a campus recruitment drive — have started reducing their intake. This time last year, around 80% placements were complete but it's still around 75%," said K Shreedhar, placement officer at PESIT. For original  post see here

Now loans for skill development training!

Skill development training, which costs anywhere between Rs 20, 000 and Rs 50,000 for a typical engineering student, now comes along with loans which can be converted into easy monthly instalments (EMIs).
Notable dip in campus placement is making technical colleges add professional training through skill development institutes according to Mr. Santanu Paul, CEO, Talent Sprint, a skill development firm. The company, in association with a social enterprise, is facilitating loans for students aiming to be employable.
“Skill set is the focus for hiring corporates in the backdrop of over 80 percent of engineering and IT students lacking it. While some colleges foot the bill themselves, others make students pay the additional training fee. We have tied up with Milaap, a social enterprise, to aid wanting students fund their training,” Santanu said. Milaap had extended 150 short term loans to students taking skill development training at Talent Sprint, said Mayukh Choudhury, co-founder of Milaap Social Ventures. The social enterprise is funded by National Skill Development Council (NSDC) and individual funding agencies. For complete post see here

Engg colleges fear grim campus hirings

For, barring the Indian Institutes of Technology () and a few other top engineering institutes like BITS Pilani, many fear they might be able to place only 60-70 per cent of their students against 80-85 per cent last year.

For instance, at the Ahmedabad-based Indus University that runs the Indus Institute of Technology and Engineering, the placement process started in September 2013, but so far it has bagged only 14 offers across its 15 branches, including six engineering branches. The batch size is around 900, with 60 seats in each branch.
CAMPUS BEAT
  • Placement scene at engineering institutes not very positive
  • Students planning to opt for higher education in absence of jobs
  • Institutes say placement for only 80-85% of batch size possible
  • Salary packages take a dip
  • Slowdown in automotive and  sector impacting placements
